If you enjoy debating big ideas, questioning how the world works, and writing persuasive arguments, the John Locke Institute Global Essay Prize is one of the most prestigious academic challenges you can take on. It is designed to test your critical thinking and push you beyond what you learn in a standard high school classroom.
What is it?
The John Locke Essay Competition is an annual, international academic writing contest organized by the John Locke Institute (an independent educational organization in Oxford, UK). It invites students to tackle complex, open-ended questions that university undergraduates typically debate.
The goal isn’t to just summarize existing information or write a standard school report. Instead, the competition challenges you to build a bold, original argument, defend it with evidence, and prove why your viewpoint makes sense. Top performers are invited to an exclusive academic conference and awards dinner in London, and winners receive scholarships for John Locke Institute programs.

Who is it for?
The competition is completely free to enter (as long as you submit by the regular deadline) and open to ambitious students worldwide.
- Age Limit: You must be under 19 years old as of the submission deadline (May 31, 2026). There is no minimum age.
- Divisions:
- Junior Division: For students who are under 15 years old by the submission deadline.
- Senior Division: For students aged 15 to 18. (New for 2026: There are no separate “junior questions”—all students choose from the same list of questions, but juniors are judged against their own age group).
- Team Size: Individual participation only. You must be the sole author of your essay.
What are the Categories?
For 2026, the competition offers a selection of specific, challenging questions spread across diverse academic disciplines. You must choose one question from one of the following subjects:
- Philosophy
- Politics
- Economics
- History
- Psychology
- Theology
- Law
(Note: While you can only submit one essay per category, you are allowed to enter multiple categories if you choose.)
How to Participate
Participating requires independent research and a lot of planning:
- Register Early: You must create an account on the John Locke Institute portal before the registration deadline, even if your essay isn’t finished yet.
- Choose a Question: Review the official questions for your chosen category and pick the one that sparks your interest.
- Research and Write: Build your argument. You have a strict 2,000-word limit (excluding footnotes and bibliographies).
- Find a Referee: You must provide the contact details of an academic referee (like a school teacher) who can verify that the essay is entirely your original work.
- Submit Online: Upload your essay as a PDF using the specific file-naming format required by the institute.
How to Win
Essays are judged by distinguished academics from Oxford, Cambridge, and other top universities. They read thousands of essays, so to win, your work must stand out:
- Have a Clear Thesis: You must take a definitive side. Do not write an essay that just says “there are pros and cons to both sides.” State your argument clearly in the introduction.
- Be Original: Judges reward fresh, well-defended viewpoints over a survey of what famous philosophers have already said. (AI-generated essays are strongly discouraged because they lack original, human insight and will not score well).
- Engage with Counterarguments: The best essays don’t ignore opposing views. They tackle the strongest possible counterargument head-on and prove why their own thesis still holds up.
- Write Persuasively: Your essay should be logically structured, with each paragraph advancing the argument rather than just listing independent points.
