If you are a student who loves to question the world around you, challenge established norms, and explore futuristic or controversial ideas, the Cambridge Re: think Essay Competition is built for you. Organized by the Cambridge Centre for International Research (CCIR), this competition asks students to step away from standard textbook answers and tackle complex global issues with fresh, original perspectives.

What is it?
The Cambridge Re:think Essay Competition is a highly prestigious, free-to-enter international academic writing contest. Rather than giving you a simple topic, the competition provides thought-provoking prompts created by distinguished university professors from institutions like Harvard, Oxford, Stanford, and Cambridge.
Your job is to pick one of these prompts and write a deeply researched, well-argued essay. The best writers don’t just win cash prizes and scholarships—top performers are invited to an exclusive Award Ceremony and high-table dinner at King’s College, University of Cambridge.
Who is it for?
The competition is open to talented young minds from all over the world, completely free of charge. For 2026, the competition is split into two age-based divisions to ensure fair judging:
- Junior Division: For students aged 11 to 13.
- Senior Division: For students aged 14 to 18 (who have not yet started their undergraduate university studies).
- Team Size: Individual participation only. You must research and write the essay entirely on your own.
What are the Categories?
Instead of picking your own topic from scratch, you must choose to answer one of the official prompts released each year. These prompts span a wide array of fascinating and often controversial subjects. Recent themes have included:
- Technology and Ethics
- Space Exploration and Governance
- Animal Rights and Society
- Biotechnology
- Economics and Globalization
- Freedom and Accountability
- Public Health
- Laws and Society
How to Participate
Taking part requires independent academic research and careful drafting. Here is the process:
- Register Online: Create an account on the CCIR admissions portal to access the official prompts.
- Choose Your Prompt: Read through the questions released by the professors and pick the one that challenges you the most.
- Research and Write: Draft an original essay of 1,000 to 2,000 words (excluding footnotes and bibliography). You must format it using MLA 8 citation style.
- Submit Anonymously: Because the competition uses a strict double-blind review process, you must remove your name and any personal details from the document. Upload it as a PDF before the deadline.
How to Win
With over 13,000 submissions globally in recent years, the judging panel—made up of leading researchers—looks for exceptional quality. To earn a Gold, Silver, or Bronze award (or one of the special Logos, Pathos, and Ethos prizes), you need to:
- Be Original: Don’t just repeat what others have said. The judges want to see unique insights, alternative futures, and fresh angles on complex issues. (AI assistance and plagiarism are strictly banned and will result in disqualification).
- Back it up with Research: A strong opinion isn’t enough. You must support your arguments with credible evidence, academic journals, and data-driven insights.
- Argue Clearly: Structure your essay logically. Every paragraph should build your argument smoothly, leading to a strong, well-reasoned conclusion.
